Last September and October 2019 when the council engaged the community members in collecting feedback for the proposed framework for the Casey Complex site. Now the residents of Cranbourne East will soon enjoy a bustling new precinct at the Casey Complex site, as the new Complex Urban Design Framework (UDF) gets adopted.

Located in the Cranbourne East, the Complex UDF will support the growing community nd create a place that engenders an exciting and vibrant community destination through intense and diverse land uses.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Susan Serey noted the positive opportunities the precinct will provide, whilst effectively meeting the community’s needs.

“As the City of Casey continues to expand and mature, Council continues to look at ways to improve the facilities and infrastructure our communities need and deserve.”

The frameworks aims to enhance existing landmarks and improve the look and feel of the place by providing design guidance for the development of buildings, public areas, and open space within the Casey Complex site.

With improved amenities, shops, cafes and dedicated public open spaces the precinct will attract potential investment, innovation and community events and in turn open up job opportunities through education, community, health, recreation and leisure facilities.

The framework also aims to improve traffic flow in and around the precinct and access to public transport options with a key priority of the project to connect Main Street to the future Cranbourne East train station, enhancing pedestrian safety and access to the precinct’s facilities.

Main Street concept design is set to commence in 2022.

Tennis Victoria, in partnership with participating Casey clubs will have a series of Open Court Sessions, where local residents can drop into their local tennis club for a hit, with all equipment supplied.

Time to tie up the laces and hit the court, but don’t despair, there’s no experience, or even partners required.
From 1 – 29 February 2020, eight local clubs will take part in a series of Open Court Sessions,

Sessions will run for around 90-minutes, with a 10-minute warm-up, followed by 50-minutes of tennis activities and then 30-minutes of socialising and will run across various times and days, depending on what club partcipants select.

Participating Casey clubs include:

  • Berwick Tennis Club
  • Clyde Tennis Club
  • Cranbourne South Tennis Club
  • Cranbourne Tennis Club
  • Devon Meadows Tennis Club
  • Fountain Gate Tennis Club
  • Hallam Tennis Club
  • Harkaway Tennis Club
  • Narre Warren North Tennis Club
  • Narre Warren Tennis Club

City of Casey Mayor Cr Susan Serey encouraged Casey residents to take part and use this as an opportunity to make new friends and learn new skills.

“This initiative by Tennis Victoria is a fantastic motivation for our residents to get out and try something new,” she said.

“With so many local clubs taking part, it’s an opportunity not to be missed, and might just open the door to a brand-new hobby.

“The best part about these events is that all you have to do is show up with a little bit of enthusiasm, and our dedicated tennis club’s will look after the rest,” Cr Serey said.

Local clubs are also opening their courts for hire, and cardio sessions, depending on what sort of exercise you’re after.

Casey residents, it’s time to channel your inner Ash Barty and score yourself an ace night out.

“Fit Body, Fit Mind” With this mantra in their hearts, the Aboriginal Gathering Place Mentor Program continues its success in empowering young participants to practice healthy habits and reconnect with the community. Both community and participants have reportedly seen many positive outcomes from the participants of the program.

Their program includes one-on-one mentoring sessions that help them fulfill their study or career goals, they also have fitness sessions 3 days a week early in the morning followed by breakfast.

Feedback of participants
Program participant Hezekiah completed his year 12 studies last year and is now looking for work as he continues to participate in the program.

“I love the program. It makes me get out of bed and get moving. Otherwise, I would stay in bed all day and do nothing. After we train and have breakfast, I’m motivated to look for what type of work I want to do,” said Hezekiah.

One female participant had previously not engaged with her local community for some time and made unhealthy lifestyle choices.

Since joining the program, she has consistently participated in both the one-on-one mentoring and fitness sessions and reported a shift in her mindset.

She has continued to make positive choices and practices healthy lifestyle habits in her daily life, which had now provided her with new career opportunities.

Feedback of Community
The success of the program brought a positive response from the community and local businesses, with Worldwide Mix Martial Arts sponsoring the program with a range of brand-new training equipment to support the fitness sessions.

Participants are also talking about the fitness sessions at home, which will help encourage healthy habits for families and the wider community.

Have you visited the latest outdoor fitness destination in Casey? If not, have a walk with a beautiful view at Bayview Park in Narre Warren North. Inspired by the popular 1,000 steps in Upper Ferntree Gully, the park was officially opened late last year and located in Bayview Park is located at 188T Quarry Road, Narre Warren.

More than $800,000 were invested to transform the former Narre Warren landfill site into a beautiful public park according to Oaks Ward Councillors Rosalie Crestani and Milla Gilic.

“This is a wonderful open space with fitness and walking tracks that cater for a range of fitness levels and abilities. It also provides magnificent sweeping views across Casey and out towards Westernport Bay and Port Phillip Bay,” Cr Crestani said.

Cr Milic said Council is also working on a masterplan for the site “to guide additional improvements and development”, with future opportunities for community input as the plans progress.

$5.9 million worth facility of Botanic Ridge Family and Community centre in the ground of Botanic Ridge Primary School opened its doors for the first time this week. The new centre that is set to welcome kindergarten children is jointly funded by the state government and the city of Casey.

The Centre has 2 kindergarten playroom for the four-year-old kid, 2 Consultation rooms for Maternal and child health and a for-hire large multi-purpose community room. There are also plans for a new sports reserve to be constructed south of the primary school site that will cater for soccer and cricket. With the project currently in the design phase, it is anticipated that construction will start in the next 4 years.

The location of the new Family and Community Centre is very ideal because this can make a smooth transition from kindergarten to school and parents will have a single drop-off point for their preschoolers, school-aged children and those attending the centre.

The new online portal is set to be a mobile-friendly so residents can easily inform the council on the spot any issues inside the city.

“In most cases, sending us a photo is the easiest and quickest way to notify us of issues that need addressing. That’s why a key feature of the new online portal is the ability to take a photo and upload it to show us what the issue is,” Cr Serey said.

“The sooner we know, the sooner we can act. We need residents to report theses issue, you are the eyes and ears of keeping council’s presentation the envy of other councils.”

Cr Serey said Casey Council was committed to creating better customer service, especially through the use of improved technology and digital channels.

Cr Rex Flannery was appointed as a Council delegate for Special committee planning during the special Council meeting on 31 December 2019. The City is also accepting interested applicants for the two independent members to join the special committee and will be considered at Council’s Ordinary meeting on 21 January 2020. Independent committee members will be required to have relevant planning, governance and probity experience.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Susan Serey said the Special Committee established under the Local Government Act 1989 will have delegated decision-making authority under the Planning and Environment Act to deal with approximately four per cent of planning applications. The majority of other planning applications will continue to be decided by Council officers under delegated authority.

“This enables Council to fulfil its obligations as a responsible authority in a timely fashion, protects applicant and objector rights and protects the integrity of decisions being made whilst the IBAC investigations are underway,” said the Mayor.

“Councillors have continued to work diligently throughout the holiday break to provide assurance to our Casey community that accountability, serving and delivering outcomes is our primary focus for our community.

“The committee will operate with the authority to make decisions on behalf of Council in relation to the Planning and Environment Act. It will not replace our role as Councillors or take away the community’s voice. Residents will still be able to approach their Ward Councillors or Cr Flannery should they have concerns around specific planning applications, which will be provided to the Special Committee. The right to object to VCAT for applicants and objectors means no one’s voice or rights are silenced.

“We need to ensure that we are meeting our obligations around planning applications being considered in a timely matter and are being processed in the quickest possible way, which the Special Committee will allow us to do.”

It is anticipated that the Special Committee will meet monthly, commencing in February 2020. Meetings of the Special Committee would be open to the public.

The festive season is really fast approaching, along with all that extra wrapping, packaging and disposable tableware, everyone in Casey is encourage to recycle right.

Recycling in the City of Casey is back on track with a new contract signed with Cleanaway to accept and process recycling collected through our kerbside service. It’s important that everyone recycle right to avoid contamination because the result of the recent audit shows that 24 percent of contamination had been found out – that’s non-recyclable material being put into the blue recycling bin.

Putting incorrect items into the bin leads to increased processing costs and depending on the extent of the contamination, it could mean other recyclables are unable to get processed and the entire batch gets sent to landfill.

Top recycling tips:

  • Aluminum foil and trays can be recycled just scrunch them up a little.
  • Paper (not cellophane or foil) wrapping can be recycled, just remove all sticky tape.
  • Separate soft plastics and return to the Red Recycling Bins at Coles and Woolworths. Check out the Red Cycle website for more details.
  • Batteries cannot go in any kerbside bin – return to Aldi or Officeworks for recycling.
  • Do not put clothing or textiles in the recycle bin – these can get caught in the sorting machinery.
  • keep your recycling loose in the bin (don’t bag it)
  • Do not put food in the recycle bin
  • Do not put nappies in the recycle bin.
